Happy Pie (Pi) Day

Alright, circle enthusiasts, let’s jump headfirst into the deliciously nerdy world of Pi Day, celebrated every March 14th (3.14, get it?).

This is not your average, run-of-the-mill holiday. Oh no, this is when math geeks and pie lovers unite in the ultimate celebration of circular logic—and we’re not just talking about me arguing with your GPS. The origin story of Pi Day is almost as tasty as the pies it honors.

San Francisco, 1988.

A physicist named Larry Shaw, who clearly understood the importance of blending science with sugary treats decided to celebrate the day with his colleagues by marching around one of the Exploratorium’s circular spaces and then consuming fruit pies. Fast forward to 2009, when the U.S. House of Representatives, in a rare moment of unanimous delicious decision-making, officially recognized March 14th as National Pi Day. This was a big win for π enthusiasts everywhere, finally giving the infinite number the recognition it deserved (and an excellent excuse to eat more pie). And thus, a legend, and legendary day, were born.

Today, Pi Day is a full-blown phenomenon celebrated by millions who partake in a variety of pi(e)-related shenanigans. Schools often organize math-related activities to engage students with pi, including competitions to memorize the most digits of pi (there are over a million!), and of course pie baking and eating contests! 

And let’s talk about the pies because, let’s be honest, they’re the real stars of the show. This is the day when pie becomes more than just a dessert! Bakers across the land get all jazzed up, decorating their flaky creations with the π symbol or the seemingly endless digits of pi. From your grandma’s secret apple pie recipe to those avant-garde bakers who think, “Yes, a π-shaped pie filled with smaller pies is the way to go,” the creativity is as boundless as pi itself.
