Essential Cooking Tools

At RecipeKick we believe that everyone can cook and you don’t need fancy equipment to get started…but some tips on what to do with what you have and what to maybe splurge on in the future are always helpful!

The often-overlooked foundation of any kitchen? Cleaning products, including dish soap and sponges. Having clean equipment in a clean space is half the battle of cooking.

Starting with the all-important cutting board. Maybe options exist in the marketplace, but plastic boards are great for cutting meat, and wood cutting boards are a great general all-purpose cutting surface!

Cutting board tips:

  1. Use lemons and salt for natural disinfection and oiling (food safe, like mineral oil) for maintenance.

  2. To guarantee your cutting board does not slip, put a damp paper towel under the cutting board!

Second most important tool in a kitchen? The knife. If you can only have 3 knives go with the chef’s knife, the paring knife, and a serrated knife!

Knife care tips:

  1. Hot water and soap are recommended for cleaning. We strongly advise against dishwasher use for knives to prevent damage

  2. For more on knives including how to keep them sharp, check out this blog.

Other tools every kitchen needs:

  1. Measuring cups and spoons

  2. A good set of cookware—stainless steel is the go-to and it’s great to have a cast iron pan or two in your arsenal!

  3. A Microplane

  4. Mixing and prep bowls

  5. Baking sheets – great for baking and roasting just about anything and a great surface for mise en place!

  6. Have lots of spoons around – for stirring, tasting, and measuring.

  7. A Rubber spatula
